Kindness and Respect Are at HOME at PS 217

“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” – Mark Twain

February is National Random Acts of Kindness Month. It is the perfect opportunity to discuss with your children what respect, kindness, compassion or empathy are and how these should be the norm in everyone’s life. If you are walking the hallways of our school these days you can see wonderful and powerful posters encouraging kindness and positive behavior. Challenge your children in a discussion about the Kindness Campaign in our school this month and you will be amazed to find out about the many ways respect and kindness are reinforced on a daily basis. Encourage them to share with you and with their class moments when someone was kind to them as well as when they were displayed an act of kindness.

Even better, Random Acts of Kindness Week 2020 kicks off on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 and ends on February 17, 2020. Seven heart-warming days when you can make it your family mission to brighten someone else’s day by doing something kind for no specific reason. Small actions can make the world a better place.

Overlapping with Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 10 – 14, 2020 is Respect for All (RFA) Week in all NYC public schools. A safe and supportive school, free from any type of bullying and discrimination is what we have and want to maintain here at PS 217. Everyone is committed to have kindness and respect be part of our daily routine. To reinforce these values, PS 217 Student council is challenging the whole school community to observe each day of the Respect for All Week in a different fun way:

Monday, 2/10: Favorite Sports Team Gear

Tuesday, 2/11: Crazy Sock Day

Wednesday, 2/12: Crazy Hat Day

Thursday, 2/13: Inside Out Day

Friday, 2/14: 100th Day of School – dress like you are 100 years old – what a respectful age! Or you can choose to wear RED for love. This is also No One Eats Alone Day!

The Bully and the Beast – Parent Workshop – Wednesday 2/12/20

What a perfect time for a great workshop! Right in the middle of our Respect for All Week, we invite all of our families to attend The Bully and the Beast, a bullying prevention parent workshop taking place this Tuesday, February 12 at 8:15 AM in the PS 217 Library (Room 307).
Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. As parents and guardians, it is important to understand the various faces of this concept, to discuss it with your children, to recognize the warning signs and learn how to get help if ever needed.
Please join our guest speakers: David Hosten from the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the team from Jewish Child Care Association on Tuesday at 8:15 AM in the PS 217 Library to learn about, discuss and address any concerns that you might have on this topic.

Valentine’s Day Bake Sale – February 13 and 14, 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM

The Valentine’s Day Bake Sale is back in a new format. This sweet event will take place on Wednesday, February 13 and Thursday, February 14 during the lunch hours (10:40 am – 1:30 pm) in the PS 217 Cafeteria. Each grade will shop the sale during their lunch hours according to each grade’s lunch schedule:

Kindergarten:    10:40 AM – 11:05 AM

Grade 5:             11:05 AM – 11:30 AM

Grade 2:             11:35 AM – 12:00 PM

Grade 3:             12:00 PM – 12:25 PM

Grade 1:             12:30 PM – 12:55 PM

Grade 4:             12:55 PM – 1:20 PM

Parent volunteers are much needed! How can you help?

  1. Send your child to school with a few dollars to let them buy a cupcake and a gift at the sale.
  2. Bake cupcakes and bring them to school. We need many baked goods on both days!
  3. Pick up a tray of donuts from our nearby Dunkin’ Donuts and donate them to the sale.
  4. Work the sale! The event will run better if you are part of it. We need parent volunteers to man the tables. One hour, two hours, or until the last cupcake is sold, whatever time you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

For any questions or if you want to volunteer, please e-mail your PA Co-Presidents, Emily emilykrell@gmail.com and Nowshin nausheenali11@gmail.com

2020 NYC School Survey

It is again that time of the year when families, teachers and students in grades 6 – 12 take the NYC School Survey to share feedback about their schools. As one of the nation’s largest education surveys, this survey feedback can help improve your child’s learning environment. You can take this year’s survey between February 10th and March 31st, 2020. Your voice is important and we need every parent / guardian to fill out and return the survey. In 2019, 83% of our parents / guardians returned their surveys and we would love to get as close as possible to 100% this year.

Families have now two ways to fill out the survey: on paper or online.

You will receive your NYC School Survey in a green envelope on March 5th, during our Parent Teacher Conferences. A letter will soon go home explaining you how to receive your green envelope before this date.

If you prefer the online version, you can take the survey online in 10 languages any time until March 31st, by visiting https://www.schools.nyc.gov/about-us/reports/school-quality/nyc-school-survey. Use the eight-digit survey access code at the bottom of your paper survey to login. If you do not have your survey materials, you can look up your survey access code on the survey login page or call 1-877-819-2363 for assistance. Once submitted, please print the confirmation page and return it to your child’s teacher.

All students who are returning the surveys or the confirmation pages will be rewarded. Class rewards are now being decided upon for classes with 100% return rate. Keep tuned!
