Chess 217, the Panthers!

NESTtourney2

NESTtourney

Under the instruction of third-grade teacher Ira Libov and chess coach Fred Magovern in our Magnet After-School chess club this past winter, followed up by intense tournament prep in a Friday night chess club this fall, four fourth graders in Ms. Scionti’s class beat out kids on nine other citywide school teams to win the team trophy at the NYChess Kids tournament at the NEST Sunday. (217 even beat the NEST and the Anderson team:)  The fab four proudly wore their homemade 217 “Chess Panthers” T-shirts to present the attractive, crystal team trophy to their happy principal this week.  Individual trophies were also won in the 5th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st Place Categories!  Way to go P.S. 217!!

Note: If your child is interested in learning to play chess, basic and intermediate chess club will be included in this year’s Magnet After-School offerings. To sign up for chess club or any other wonderful Magnet After-School offerings, look for the sign-up announcement soon after winter break.
