Brooklyn Public Library is calling all Brooklyn Summer Readers!

Summer is a great time to read what you like, to learn new things, and have fun with friends. Many free programs and events for all ages are available throughout the summer at your local library branch!

Summer Reading at Brooklyn Public Library kicks off on Thursday, June 8 with free, fun activities and entertainment from 10:30am until 3pm on the Central Library Plaza. This year, the Plaza will be transformed into a maker space with projects for all ages! (In case of rain or extreme weather conditions, this event will be held indoors in the Youth Wing, Dweck Center and Lobby.)

Thanks to a partnership among the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and First Book (www.firstbook.org), a FREE book distribution will take place on Saturday, June 3 between 8AM-1PM at PS/IS High School 323 (210 Chester St., Brooklyn NY 11212).

Over 40,000 books for all ages, from birth to age 18 will available on a first come, first served basis, so plan to arrive early! To benefit from this, you must be registered with First Book:

  • Fill out the form “First Book Registration Form” available for download at:

  • Scan or photograph the form and return it to Betty Zohar at bzohar@uft.org

Each parent (1 per household) will be able to select 15 books to take home (as long as books last). Please bring your own boxes, baskets or bags for your books.

District 22 Spring Open Houses for Middle Schools

Monday May 22nd to Friday May 26th District 22 middle schools will open their door between 9 AM and 11 AM for all current 4th grade families. Take this chance to get a jump start on the middle school admissions process.  Current 4th grade parents can tour the middle schools and speak with administration. The Friends of PS 217 Spring Party – 06/03/2016 @ 6:30PM

The Friends of P.S. 217 is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing involvement in P.S. 217 among neighbors, alumni, current 217 families, local businesses and key community members who believe that high quality public education is essential.

The Friends of P.S. 217 is holding its annual Spring Party on Friday, June 2 at 6:30 pm. They would like to invite all interested parents and families (grown-ups only, please!) to join them in celebrating the extensive extracurricular programs offered by P.S. 217 and to ensure that these programs may continue uninterrupted next year.

Garden Concerts – every Wednesday until 6/23 at 6PM

Don’t make plans for Wednesday evenings! Join us in the P.S. 217 garden for music and refreshments!

For the third concert, scheduled on May 24, you will be treated to duets with Lucy Kalantari and Lloyd Miller. They will liven up the garden with folk, jazz and rock songs for the whole family. Winner of Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award, Winner of Independent Music Awards for Best Children’s Music Song, International Songwriting Competition Winner in Children’s Category … these are just a few ways to introduce to you Lucy Kalantari. We are honored to have her back again this year in our garden and we hope that everyone will have a memorable evening and sing along with her. Did we mention that her newest song, Balloon won 1st place in the International Songwriting Competition in Children’s Category?

Lloyd Miller is the founder and front man of the Deedle Deedle Dees, a critically-acclaimed educational rock band based in New York City. The Deedle Deedle Dees released a new album in the fall of 2016 Sing-a-long History, Vol II: The Rocket Went Up!. The album features songs songs inspired by true stories from the history of science, discovery, and magic. We hope to see you and your little ones for this great concert too.

Puppet Show and Puppet Making Family Workshop – families of students in grades Pre-K, K, 1st and 2nd

It’s show time at PS 217! Apartment for Rent, an interactive puppet show will remind your children how important it is to be a good neighbor. Right after the show you will be entertained with a hands-on family workshop where you will create some simple finger puppets that can further help you and your child put on your own puppet show at home! Come have fun and be creative!

We had a wonderful attendance this past Tuesday and we hope to see you back for the second part of Flip’s Fantastic Journal workshop with Angelo DeCesare. All participants created a pop-up box and their own 3D character. They are looking forward to attach a door that opens and closes to reveal their character and to fill out their blank journal booklet with a related story.

Have you ever wished to make your own animation film? Well, it’s a long road to get there, but how about start with something as easy as a short video with items moving around? Come on Tuesday and learn how to make and share short creative videos using bits of paper that will come to life under your own eyes. You and your child will learn and explore the power of stop-motion animation. Learn these valuable techniques and have lots of fun telling a story in a new and exciting way!
