November – National Family Literacy Month

National Family Literacy Day – 11/1/2017

This November, the celebration of National Family Literacy Month at PS 217 brings a great opportunity for everyone to either spark the desire or bring back a beautiful tradition of reading together as a family. We are kicking off this month and in the same time observe November 1st as National Family Literacy Day, with a 3-day family centered Read Aloud event that will take place in the classrooms, from Wednesday, 11/1/2017 to Friday, 11/3/2017.

Family literacy is at work when two generations or more – parents, children and/or extended family members – are actively engaged in learning together. We therefore invite YOU, members of our students’ families to become one of our HONORARY READERS and share your joy of reading, your favorite story book or bedtime story with our children. You can bring your own book or you can just come and we will provide you with one.

If you are interested in reading aloud to a class or more, motivate children to WANT to read, please RSVP on the letter that went home in your child’s backpack or call / e-mail: 718.434.6960 x 1 / LDubovici@schools.nyc.gov.

During the month of November, we have lined up a few events that encourage reading, so please keep an eye on them! Check out local library branches and bookstores for similar events and take advantage as much as your time allows.

Feel free to let us know how your family celebrates National Family Literacy Month and we will showcase your story, picture or idea.
