Parents Association Highlights 2017-2018

Dear PS 217 Parents,

Thank you for an amazing year!  Together with you, the Parents Association did some amazing things for our children and families.  This includes working together on:

  • Creating a new Mission and Vision for the Parents Association, that includes being Welcoming, Representative, pursuing Collection Action, encouraging Culturally Relevant education, serving as a Bridge between parents and the school, being Communicative, and adopting Fair Fundraising practices
  • Hosting Wellness In The Schools / Chef Annie’s year-long cooking classes with our kids, recipes and parent demonstrations
  • Supporting a New Curriculum and Activities around Social and Emotional Wellbeing for our kids
  • Hosting Science Night for over 200 kids and parents
  • Providing Financial Support for Fall and Spring Discovery Zone Afterschool (including studio art, ukulele, recorders, violin, trumpets, guitar, rock band, chorus and The Lion King!)
  • Hosting the Dia de los Muertos / Day of the Dead fall festival
  • Composting, growing and harvesting in our Garden
  • Raising money to support activities at the school through our classroom Penny Drive
  • Hosting Movie Nights
  • Planning fun graduation events for our fifth grade class
  • Supporting our kids reading for thousands of minutes for the PS 217 Read-a-Thon
  • Hosting breakfasts in Urdu, Bengali, Arabic, Nepali and Spanish about the new curriculum
  • Pursuing Successful Advocacy with School Construction Authority to preserve access to the playground
  • Organizing Fun Sales for our kids at Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day and making sure all kids could participate
  • Hosting the First PS 217 Summer Activity / Summer Camp Fair
  • Hosting our Cinco de Mayo spring festival with Ballet Folklorico
  • Supporting the City-Wide Campaign for Safer Streets
  • Planning our First Eid Celebration
  • Promoting Parent Engagement with our Parent Interpreters, whose work has been replicated in two other schools in District 22 and recognized by the DOE Chancellor!

Before the school year ends, we hope to see you at The Lion King, our Eid Celebration evening, the Spring Carnival and our Parents Association Elections in June!
