Calling All Brooklyn Summer Readers!

Summer is a great time to read what you like, to learn new things, and have fun with friends—and it is a critical skill that we must encourage our children to keep up all summer long. Find free programs and events for all ages throughout the summer on at the various branches of the Brooklyn Public Libraries. Here are some ways to keep your kids engaged in reading this summer:

• Declare your children Summer Readers at the local library and online at www.summerreading.org.

• Join the party on June 4! Brooklyn’s Summer Reading Kickoff is Thursday, June 4th (a day the children are off school any way!) at Central Library from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. Sign up the whole family for Summer Reading, and join a free family celebration with live music and superhero challenges. If you can’t make it to the Central library, all local branches will host Summer Reading events Thursday, June 4.

Cortelyou Branch Library will be hosting free, fun activities and entertainment both outside and inside.

1 pm: The Magic of Amore presents Summer Reading Hero. Award winning magician Amore will amaze children and their parents with a performance that is fast paced and original. Amore utilizes amazing magic, hilarious side-splitting comedy, music, and loads of audience participation all intertwined with a message about libraries, the value of books and the importance of reading.

2 pm: Kiddie Science! Take part in simple, hands-on chemistry experiments and learn not just what happens when two items are mixed, but why.

2 pm-4pm: Superhero Training Camp. Create your own superhero cape and mask, visit the temporary tattoo parlor, perform feats of strength and more.

Free popcorn and slushies will also be available!
