Asking the Right Questions

If you believe that your child may require special education services, it is important that you ask the right questions from the start. Talk to your child’s current teacher to find out if there are supports available in the general education setting at the school he or she currently attends. Those types of supports may be all your child needs.

If strategies have been implemented and you have talked to your child’s teacher and school, you may still feel that your child needs additional support. In that case, you may refer your child for a special education evaluation to determine if your child has a disability.

Assistance and additional information can be provided by your child’s school. The Family Guide to Special Education Services comes in several languages and is available at P.S. 217 in Room 110 or electronically on the DOE website at schools.nyc.gov/specialeducation.
