Olympic Mentality at PS217

On January 20, 2015 Ms. Durney and Mr. Heaney invited Olympic Track and Field Gold Medalist Derrick Adkins to our school. Mr. Adkins was in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Derrick spoke with our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students about “Having an Olympic Mentality”. What does it mean to have an Olympic mentality? Derrick discussed never giving up, always trying your best and make sure your main priority is school and keeping your grades on point. Derrick shared a video of his gold medal winning performance race with the students. He shared his feelings and emotions during the race, as well as after his victory. Derrick also had a Q&A session with the students. The students responded very positively to Derrick and many of the children inquired about our Mighty Milers running club that takes place here on Thursday’s afterschool.

Thank you Derrick Adkins for visiting our school and thanks you students for such a wonderful assembly.
